H.I.I.T. stands for High Intensity Interval Training. When you break it down, you are basically working out at a very high intensity level, in very small time intervals. Many workout routines demand that you run on a treadmill for hours or perform dozens of reps repeatedly at a slow pace. HIIT is the opposite. HIIT requires you to work very hard, for a very short time. If you workout like this often enough, your body will burn calories in a different, more accelerated rate.
HIIT classes are very intense. The caveat is, you don’t have to perform the workouts for very long. Each workout last as little as a few seconds to a couple minutes. Each workout is designed to get your heart rate up to the point of almost instant calorie burn and muscle building without over-extending your time involved.
Each workout only lasts a few seconds to, at most, a couple minutes. The total HIIT workout class is designed to last one hour. In that hour, you will have performed several intensive workouts.
Yes! A HIIT fitness trainer monitors your workout and ensures you are working out appropriately. You are not competing against anyone but yourself. While does HIIT workouts do trigger cardio vascular activity, HIIT is not exclusively a cardiovascular workout. HIIT relies on a combination of muscle resistance and cardio workouts to build up your strength and fitness.
HIIT workouts will do both! Because of the combination of muscle building and cardiovascular activity involved with HIIT workouts, you will both burn lots of calories and strengthen weak muscles. HIIT workouts are not designed to prioritize one over the other.
